Introduction to the MetaTrader 5 platform

The MetaTrader 5 platform is the latest version of the trading terminal created by MetaQuotes for private clients. In this article we will look at the main functions of MT5, especially those related to automated trading.

Upon logging into the MetaTrader 5 platform, familiarizing yourself with its key features becomes essential. We will focus on functionality relevant to automated trading.

The navigator tab serves as a swift menu on your MT5 platform, allowing you to choose trading bots (expert advisors), indicators, and switch between your trading accounts seamlessly:

The "Toolbox" tab opens the platform dashboard, presenting:

  • The "Trade" section, showcasing your trading account balance and current results.
  • The "Account history" section, displaying details of all closed trading operations and their outcomes.
  • The "Experts" section, revealing system prints generated by your expert advisor during trading. This area aids in promptly identifying potential issues with your trading bot by displaying error codes or error descriptions.
  • In the "Journal" section, you can review system prints specific to your trading platform.

The "Algo Trading" button activates the automatic trading mode within your platform.

For asset selection, navigate to the Market Watch tab. Here, you'll find the current server time and a list of available assets. Right-clicking "Show All" displays all tradable assets.

To access the quote window, right-click on your chosen asset and choose "Chart Window" from the drop-down menu.

The timeframe switching block allows you to select the timeframe for displaying the quote chart.
